Journal Summary
The Malaysian homestay program was initially promoted to provide local citizens with cultural experiences of multi-ethnic lifestyles and economic benefits for Malaysia's tourists and visitors. To achieve a sustainable rural tourism, homestay development especially in the rural areas need to be focused by the government and other outside agencies because it helps to boosts our economic, social, cultural and also environmental impact towards rural tourism in our country. In this journal, the local community participation play an important roles to build and maintain sustainable rural tourism in the homestay programs. Many initiatives has been developed in order to achieve the goals of rural tourism especially in the homestay sector.

Journal Theory
Social Exchange Theory 1958 by George Homans
According to Homans (1958), social exchange theory is a sociological and psychological theory that studies the social behavior in the interaction of two parties that implement a cost-benefit analysis to determine risks and benefits. Also, the theory involves economic relationships, it occurs when each party have goods that the other parties value.
Theory exchange theory has been used to gauge the influence of community participation to the sustainable homestay program. Based on this theory, the community will assist and contribute to the exchanges with visitors if they are benefit to the community. In order for the homestay operation to gain establishment and development, community participation and tourists play big role to make sure it can achieve sustainable tourism so that both parties can gain mutual benefits and values.
